Our Story

St Peter’s Cricket Club was formed in 1966, after players from the St Peter’s Football Club decided to create a competitive outlet to keep fit and keep in touch during the summer months.

The club fielded just one side in that inaugural season, with the majority of the players new to the game. Incredibly, they won the flag, with future Hall of Famers Wayne Lowery and Adrian Lloyd and Team of the Century member Darryl Welsh proving influential.

Since those humble beginnings, St Peter’s has tasted 1st XI Premiership success a further six times, including 1991/92, 1996/97, 2006/07, 2021/22 and 2023/24. All of these flags, bar the formative three, came in Division 2 GCA. Club Hall of Fame member John Plummer has played in three 1stXI flags and a host of players have two premiership medals. Following premierships in the top three grades in 2023/24, the Saints are currently competing in the GCA’s Division 1.

In a testament to club strength and depth, Club Championships have been won in five seasons. In a golden period from 2021-24, seven premierships were attained across the four top grades. In fact, the St Peter's CC 2nd XI must surely rank as one of the strongest sides of any club in the region, with 11 premierships across the past 20 seasons.

The club added a Senior Women’s team in 2021-22, with some incredibly hard work completed behind the scenes to get a side up and running. The team made the finals in their debut year and were runners-up in their grade in 2022-23. A Junior girls’ team was added in 2023/24, creating a pipeline for senior players into the future.

St Peter's traditional strength as a club, particularly in their on-field successes, has been their incredible knack of fielding strong junior sides. The club has had no less than 13 players selected in the Under 16 Dowling Shield side for Geelong, one of junior cricket’s most prestigious accolades. The crowning glory for the junior section came in 2021/22, with the Under 17 team winning the premiership in the GCA Division 1 competition. An amazing five players from that team played Dowling Shield. Perhaps the real reason why the club continually produces such outstanding junior sides is its quality array of volunteers and helpers.

On top of this, St Peter's Cricket Club has always been a special place. A culture of community has always been promoted. Players all take their turn to help. The club history is always on show. The past players and champions are always around and frequent the club, forming connections with current players. So, the history is a tangible and living and breathing asset. For such a small club, the important pillars of success that it was founded on remain. This is the reason why multiple generations call the club home. A special place.
